I love this comment from Baroness Michelle Mone, of Ultimo push-up bra fame, who I interviewed for The National.
“I think enterprise in the UAE is very different from the doom and gloom of the UK. In the UAE, business is booming and there is a positive attitude towards commerce. There is clear confidence in the economy and people are looking for opportunities to do things bigger and better.
“The general culture in the UK is very negative, which has a knock-on effect on business. I blame the bad weather.”
Having moved back from the UAE to the UK last year (a ‘repat’), I can’t help but agree. In the UAE, while the cost of starting a free zone, freelance business is prohibitively high, there’s a real entrepreneurial spirit and positive energy, a buzz and a can-do attitude that makes lots of people set up shop and really make it work.
After a bright summer in the UK, autumn drudgery is setting in along with the dark mornings, rain and central heating and it can be really quite hard to stay motivated (even if I can do most of my work in my PJs with a never-ending mug of tea beside me). I think it’s time to try out some co-working hubs to see if I can get my mojo back before winter comes in earnest…
